The patchwork served two purposes in Eastern Anatolian life. First, they were used to teach young girls how to embroider, and give them a chance to practice their finery. By tradition, the mother would teach her daughters many styles of design, and let her daughters practice on cloth samples from the house. All of the girls in the family were then able to use their own creativity and skills to make different designs, each typically trying to outdo the other. The mother would then take the works of the other girls in the family, and sew them together into her own design, usually with colored silk threads. The complete piece was a representation of the unity and teamwork of the family. The second purpose being that when one of the girls of the family married, she would take with her one of these patchworks to use in her new home, in remembrance of the family she came from. Though these have been around for years, they have only recently become popular in the market for those outside of village families. They are bright and colorful, each covered with unique patches and sewn into unique designs. Outside of the village, people use them in their homes as works of art and history, either on the wall, as a bedspread, a couch cover, etc.
